Chapter 1 Introduction

The ICEreader® SDK provides robust HTML/XML rendering capabilities to developers who need to implement professional HTML-rendering capabilities in their Java applications. With the SDK you can, for example, embed an HTML help viewer into your Java application, or enable your users to view Web content on a corporate intranet.

The ICEreader SDK includes the same set of Java libraries found in the ICEbrowser® SDK for rendering static HTML/XML content. You can create a basic HTML viewer as a standalone implementation or as an integrated part of a desktop application.

However, ICEreader applications are not intended for general browsing on the Internet or for viewing complex dynamic HTML (DHTML) documents. If you need to provide support for JavaScript, displaying applets, PDF or SVG files, or to use the ICEsoft HTTP module (which implements HTTP/1.0 and HTTP/1.1, and supports cookies, persistent connections, redirects, proxies, and caching), you should instead use the ICEbrowser SDK, which offers all of these advanced features.
